I would just like to take a little time today to urge you to go to your local comic shop sometime this week. As you may or may not have heard, one of the most well known chains of shops, Atomic Comics, have closed their doors for good. As both a comic reader and a comic shop employee this is more than a little concerning. I don’t want to see any shop fail, but to see one this big go down is both sad and scary.
We live in tough economic times, but if you have some spare money that you’re looking to spend this week, you should do it at your local comic shop. There are still plenty of comic readers out there, but the readers that buy from shops seem to be shrinking. Online stores like Amazon and illegal downloading (which is taking money out of the pockets of both creators and shop owners, but that’s a discussion for another time) have been taking chunks out of the money that would to go shops for the past couple of years now.
We as readers need to help make a difference. We can’t depend on others to do it for us. Every book that you buy, whether it’s one book or thirty, will help. The more shops that we have the more it helps the industry as a whole.
So this week go to your local comic shop and buy something. It will help a local business, the comic industry, and the economy all at once.
